Day 65

Some people listen to music or books.  I think when I’m driving.  All manner of weird questions go through my thinker.  This day’s most pressing question was about hay.

“Hay for Sale” Not surprising since I was traveling in rural Georgia.  Somewhere down the road a second sign with “Alfalfa Hay for Sale”.  Isn’t all hay alfalfa?  I guess not.  The last straw (yes, yes, pun intended) was “Horse and Cow Hay for sale”.  What the heck? I’ve never thought much about hay but as I think about it on this day the major question is, isn’t hay just hay?

The answer is a definite “no”.

Let’s get one misconception out of the way immediately.  Straw and hay are not the same.  Hay is grown to be fed to animals.  Straw is the byproduct of producing grains.  It all looks the same to me but maybe I’ve only seen straw up close eh?  So many questions, and even more questions.

Hay is harvested from, yes, alfalfa, and other crops like timothy and clover.  So the person advertising “Hay for Sale” is not being very specific.  On the other hand, hawking “Horse and Cow Hay” could be confusing.  Horses need very high-quality hay, not much dust, and no mold.  On the other hand, cows will eat anything.

Sounds like me, but I digress.

I really don’t care about hay.  So, I don’t have more to say, except to say it was fun satisfying my curiosity.

On the road in rural Georgia.
